CSUN Outreach to Host Live Satellite Uplink for Educators/Faculty

California State Northridge’s Western Region Outreach Center & Consortia (WROCC), a project of the National Center on Deafness is shooting for the stars with its first satellite uplink by hosting a live national teleclass for faculty working with students who are deaf and hard of hearing on Thursday, Sept. 24 from noon to 2 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.

A panel of professionals will share their experience with educators nationwide in this interactive teleclass. “Faculty are on the front lines when it comes to serving students who are deaf or hard of hearing,” said a teleclass organizer.

The class is designed to give faculty and other service providers the tools to create a successful experience for both students and educators.

“Focus on Faculty: Effective Pedagogy with Students Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing” will feature strategies from a variety of professionals on how to integrate students into mainstream classrooms.

Topics include classroom participation, accommodations, using sign language interpreters, grading speeches, evaluating written projects and working with visual learners.

Herb Larson, Director of CSUN’s National Center on Deafness, will serve as moderator. CSUN in partnership with the NCOD has mainstreamed thousands of deaf and hard of hearing students into university classes in the past 34 years. The center shares its model practices through a federal grant from the U.S. Dept. of Education.

Panelists include NCOD counselor and professor of English and public speaking Dr. Barbara Boyd; Robert Johnson, professor and Dean of Business and Workforce Development at Chabot College in Hayward; Dr. Elliott McIntire, CSUN geography professor and Interim Associate Dean College of Social and Behavioral Sciences; Dr. Elena Marchisotto, CSUN math professor and Director of Developmental Math Programs; and CSUN journalism professor Dr. Maureen Rubin.

The teleclass is a joint project of the Postsecondary Education Programs Network (PEPNet). WROCC is one of four regional centers of PEPNet , a federallyfunded consortium that supports postsecondary institutions serving students who are deaf and hard of hearing.

The three other regional centers are: the Midwest Center for Postsecondary Outreach (MCPO), St. Paul, MN; the Northeast Technical Assistance Center (NETAC), Rochester, NY; and the Postsecondary Education Consortium (PEC), Knoxville, TN.

The teleclass will be broadcast live at noon (P.S.T) from Cal State Northridge. It can be viewed across the nation as follows: 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. Mountain; 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Central; and 3:00 – 5:00 Eastern. The program will be interpreted and open captioned.

Sites are encouraged to downlink the teleclass for faculty, campus staff, interested others and students.
